Suggestion boxes adorn the hallways of far too many tyrannical small businesses. You know the drill. Write a suggestion on a card. Keep it anonymous. And if your lucky, it may just get read by someone before it gets trashed.

Whenever I see a suggestion box in an office, I know that the employees here are not able to speak candidly. I know I am in an office where ideas are muted, and genius is suppressed. I know I am in an office where personality and culture is an after thought.

Ditch the suggestion box and start a daily standing meeting where people are encouraged and rewarded for sharing suggestions and ideas. Bring back the culture of inspired genius.
